Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Cat-a-lot

Hi and thanks for clarifying the differences between symbols and emblems of municipalities in Japan. One tool I've found tremendously useful is c:Help:Gadget-Cat-a-lot, which can be used to move images between categories in bulk. It's not immediately obvious how to use it, but it is quite powerful and has replaced probably 90% of the category maintenance tasks for which I previously used HotCat. Town / municipality flags in the United Kingdom

I have uploaded a number of town and village flags in the UK, one by one as new flags are devised. In 2018 you moved the contents of the Category 'SVG town and village flags in the United Kingdom' to 'Category:SVG flags of municipalities in the United Kingdom'. It was well meant, but there is a problem: these are not municipalities. A municipality is a local authority, but villages are just settlements, vaguely defined, and their flags are an informal, local effort with no officialdom behind them. Sometimes there is a parish council that smiles on them, but mostly not. Some flags were adopted specifically because the village or town has no municipal authority of its own, so the residents wanted a mark to say "here were are", like St Anne's on Sea or Poole (the latest to appear).

The Poole flag is an interesting one: it is the banner of the arms of the old borough, adopted because the municipal borough was abolished a year ago.

That said, some of the flags are those of municipal bodies - the flags for the Cities of Aberdeen, Belfast, Edinburgh, London and Portsmouth are banners of the arms of the city in question. Birmingham is questionable - Birmingham is a city with a city council, but the flag was adopted for the place not the council.

I was going to recreate the old Category, but as we have Category:Town and village flags of the United Kingdom and they are all SVG, it is unnecessary, but I will when less busy move the non-municipal flags out of the municipalities one. Not all Category:Products of bakeries are Category:Baked food

for example, mousse is not.

on the other hand, not all baked food is "Products of bakeries". home baked food is not.

as such, it's necessary to have a cat for products produced by bakeries, just as necessary as a cat for food produced by restaurants. RZuo (talk) 12:29, 15 December 2022 (UTC)

@RZuo: A bakery is by definition a place selling baked food. They may also sell drinks or other stuff but it does not mean that the category name needs to be including all the products they sell. Please, in the future, get consensus for moves like Category:Campuses of the University of Washington => Category:University of Washington campuses. The earlier name was parallel to Category:Presidents of the University of Washington, Category:Alumni of the University of Washington‎, and Category:Faculty of the University of Washington‎; the new one is not. I'm not going to fight about it now that it is done, but before I changed your original approach here, I started a CfD so you had a chance to comment. - Jmabel ! talk 17:11, 10 August 2023 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Almost all colleges' and universities' campuses have the format places + campus(es) naming. See Category:Campuses in the United States. This is also true on English Wikipedia. And they also have alumni and faculty at the end as well. IMO, putting them at the end not only saves a few unnecessary characters, but also puts the emphasis on the place. @Jmabel: In this case, they are not nouns used as adjectives but compound nouns, similar to ball pen, office desk, bow tie, movie theater, and car park, which exist in many languages. In real life, we hear more often a Harvard alumnus and a Columbia professor than an alumnus of Harvard University and a professor of Columbia University. However, we should keep the word "University" here because sometimes there are confusions if it is omitted. Avoiding "of" is just simpler, especially for the case when the institution name has an "of". Xeror (talk) 09:59, 14 August 2023 (UTC)

Mass reversion and blanking is unhelpful for svg mons

By removing all the plain mon images [1], you removed them from the larger category tree, such as Category:Circled mon. I'm reverting your edits. Please discuss instead of making mass "minor" reverts. Its very disruptive. Smasongarrison (talk) 15:43, 4 February 2024 (UTC)

@Smasongarrison: It seems like you do not understand how Japanese emblems work. They function like seals and coats of arms. However, many of the Japanese emblems and mons were only specified in shape but not color. Some of them, especially the new ones with more than one color, do have specific colors. The colors used in the most of the monochromic emblems are mere suggestions by the municipalities at the present day. Those in black are basically "colorless", i.e. no color suggested. Categorizing them in color does not make sense. Please do not put them in color categories. Xeror (talk) 23:01, 4 February 2024 (UTC)

I don't understand the relevance here. The mon itself may be colorless, but the image of the mon has a color. I'm not classifying the general concept of the mon. I don't understand why you think it doesn't make sense. If you have a problem with the classification of color, you can nominate the category, but please don't revert the images until this gets sorted out. @Smasongarrison: It is relevant because the category does not describe the mons or emblems it contains. It is misleading to call it a black round emblem when it is indeed colorless. Also please do not put any logos, emblems, flags, coats of arms, seals, and word marks under any icon categories. These categories should only contain images that fall under icon (computing). I think you are taking an overly ridge definition of icon. Per your link: "an icon is a pictogram or ideogram displayed on a computer screen in order to help the user navigate a computer system." Smasongarrison (talk) 00:48, 5 February 2024 (UTC)
